Tips For Modified RX8.

Rotary Engine can make a lot of power if it is modified in the right way. They are plenty of people getting 500 - 600 hp out of 1.3 liter rotary. But if it is modified the wrong way, you are running into the risk of blowing engines.

Rotary engine is extra sensitive to detonation. One detonation can destroy the whole motor. If you blow one apex seal, your engine is gone!!!

Mild upgrade such as intake, cat-back exhaust, and pulley kit will be OK but any modification that will require you to modify the fuel map and timing map will need extra attention. Anything that will affect the air and exhaust flow drastically needs extra attention. There are modification that you have to do together to run the engine safely. So I will suggest the following modification stages:

1. Stage One: Intake, Cat-Back Exhaust and Pulley (No ECU tuning necessary)

2. Stage Two: Add Tubular Header (ECU tuning necessary).

3. Stage Three: Add midpipe to replace the catalytic converter. (ECU tuning necessary)

4. Stage Four: Forced Induction (Turbo or Supercharger) need to upgrade the fuel system with larger injections, high flow fuel pump, and ECU tuning, possible radiator upgrade. (higher power engine produces more heat)

Engine tuning is the most important part as you can see it is a requirement in every stages except stage one. When it comes to ECU tuning, you have to let people who have extensive knowledge on rotary engine tuning the ECU for you. The required air/fuel ratio and ignition timing is totally different from piston engine.

Please be smart and mod your RX8 carefully and wisely. Choose the people and company that have extensive knowledge on rotary engine.

Good Luck on modifying your RX8 and Happy Rotoring..........

Tips For New User Of RX8.

The Following is a brief summary for new user of RX8 which cover most issues regarding rotary engine:

1. Occasional Aggressive Driving is Good: It helps to prevent carbon buildup in the engine & intake system. Make sure to rev to at least 7500rpm to make sure all the intakes valves open. Please do not attempt the 7000rpm clutch dump launches. This is not the aggressive driving mentioned above. Its suicide your clutch and transmission.

2. Make sure your car has latest PCM flash and recalls: Below are major recalls that seem to have affected most people. Most are simple and can be done by the dealer in a day.

  • PCM (Power Train Control Module): The RX8 has a very complex computer driving the engine. Make sure get the latest PCM from the dealer.
  • Ignition Coils: Mazda redesigned the coils in 2006.
  • Starter and Battery: Original 04/05 RX8 had a weaker starter and battery that could contribute to flooding.
  • Upgraded Spark Plug: The spark plug redesigned in 2005. This the part number of RX8 spark plug (NGK RE7C-L)
  • Rough Idle: The engine mount and mount bracket was redesigned in 2005 to alleviate the roughing idle issues.
3. Use Only OEM Spark Plug: The RX8 use special NGK spark plug designed for rotary engine. The plug should replace every 25,000 miles, which sooner than piston engine.

4. Check the oil level everday or at least once a week.

The above cover almost 80% of the most major issues and problems associated with the RX8. Hopefully this will provide a better framework of understanding of your RX8. Additional technical services bulletins and information can be found at:
